Dear ______________________,
I am writing to you about the upcoming reauthorization of the Farm Bill—a bill I think could more aptly be called the Food and Farm Bill-- to express my desire for a revised Farm Bill that provides a healthier balance of interests, addresses regional differences, and offers a wider distribution of the benefits that accrue as a result of our nation’s defining farm and food policy.
As a proud Slow Food member, and “co-producer” (my buying choices impact agricultural policy and practice), and a resident of ______________, [INSERT PERSONAL STORY HERE, ABOUT HOW YOUR EXPERIENCE AS A CONSUMER/ FARMER/PRODUCER/PARENT IS AFFECTED BY THE PRESENT FOOD SYSTEM. MENTION A PARTICULAR ASPECT OF THE BILL THAT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU. E.G.: SHARE YOUR SUPPORT FOR AND/OR EXPERIENCE WITH SMALL FARMERS, THE IMPORTANCE TO YOU OF “SPECIALTY CROPS” SUCH AS FRUITS, VEGETABLES, AND NUTS, YOUR BELIEF IN THE IMPORTANCE OF PRESERVATION OF FARMLAND, YOUR DESIRE FOR BETTER SCHOOL FOOD, ETC.]
I believe in supporting food that is good, clean and fair, and therefore am calling upon Congress to enact a Farm Bill that will better ensure prosperous farms and ranches by supporting diversified crops, that will better promote and protect the health of its people by supporting community-based solutions to obesity and food security, that will work towards a sustainable stewardship of our land, and that will promote diversity and equity by expanding opportunities for disadvantaged producers.
Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely,
