What a wonderful Labor Day here in Chicago. Our Eat-In at the Waters School, a public school on Chicago’s north side had about 25-30 grown-ups and about 10 children. The contingency was mostly local to our neighborhood in Lincoln Square and parents who’s children attend the school. A few members of the school board attended. Waters School is special in Chicago because of its large and beautiful children’s garden, native prairie, native food garden, and community garden. Despite the resources that make up the ecology program, the school lunch program is typical of what you might see in any public school. They don’t even have an official kitchen, just an updated ‘reheating facility’.
Mike Quigley is our Congressman, newly elected from Rahm Emmanuel’s post. He is a friend of the garden and has been known to spend time there on community nights. I hope he will see all of the 60625 signatures (19) that we gathered on the petition.
Our conversation was mostly about how parents can get involved for the next few months and ended on what Waters School can do to partner with other local organizations to leverage resources to provide better lunches for their kids. Everyone seemed excited to go back to school tomorrow. Even the kids!
