Slow Food San Diego had a very convivial and delicious potluck picnic at San Dieguito Park just east of Del Mar and Solana beach in northern San Diego County. We had about 50 participants including children. The importance of getting real food in our schools was foremost in discussions. Scott Murrray, our president, who is a farmer and runs a very successful school farm program at the San Pasqual Academy addressed our group on the topic of school lunches. We collected signatures supporting the update of the Child Nutrition Act and had several people make pledges to join Slow Food as part of the September membership drive. Scott brought produce from his own garden and several members baked some nice desserts and pastries for our home garden produce and bake sale (I made my favorite rosemary focaccia bread). A local natural foods grocer, Jimbo’s Naturally, donated some nice wholesome and savory dishes to our potluck. Our Eat-In team of Suzanne Angell, Jennifer Felmley and Susan Thoen produced a great event.
