Time for Lunch

Help Kids Write Letters

Kids don't vote, but they're the ones who stand to benefit from or get hurt by the National School Lunch Program. Sending Congress letters from kids can be a very compelling way to advocate for change.

Writing Tips to Give Kids:

  • Introduce yourself by writing your name, age, hometown and school.
  • Explain why healthy food is important, and give examples of your favorite healthy foods.
  • Feel free to draw pictures.
  • Thank them for the time they took to read your letter.
  • Here are sample letters kids have written for the campaign.

Ways to Get Kids Involved:

  • If you are a teacher, organize a lesson plan about eating real food.
  • Have little kids draw pictures of real food. Here's a school lunch tray they can fill in (PDF).
  • Have kids write letters at after school programs, play dates, church gatherings and other activities.
  • To avoid security delays, send letters to your representatives' local offices in your district. Visit http://www.house.gov and http://www.senate.gov to get their addresses.
