World Food Day Workshops @ YSWPCS hosted by Lettuce Turnip the Beet CSGA

October 16, 2019, 8:00 am - 3:00 pm EDT

We will be hosting in class workshops on 10/16/19 at YSWPCS or 10/17/19 YSMCS. Please sign up for a time slot if you are interested in having your class participate.

The lessons are:
1. Regenerative agriculture (in the school garden) planting legumes, cover crops, and fall bulbs. Students will also learn about composting and how to build a compost bin for their home gardens.
2. Stirfry companion planters (snowpeas, tat soi, carrots) to take home.

Additionally we will be building classroom tower gardens (3 foot towers made from flex pipe, pvc, recycled plastic jugs, and 5 gallon bucket) for any science classroom (k-3 will be for homerooms) that would like one. Each tower houses 10 plants and can be used in class for year round growing and easily moved to the outdoor garden or taken home when school is out.

The methods of gardening that we teach show students how they can easily grow their own healthy food in small spaces and how gardening can help repair our earth. When children understand where thier food comes from they are more likely to make healthier choices in what they eat.
