Kids learn where food grows

October 16, 9:30 am - October 17, 4:00 pm EDT

Kindergarten and 1st grade classrooms will read the book "Tops and Bottoms" and teach students than many vegetables grow in the ground. We will discuss vegetables they may not have eaten yet. We will taste test baby spinach leaves with raspberry vinaigrette samples. Parents will receive a notice to report any food allergies to us ahead of time, and we will also create a handout with information and a recipe for parents to follow up at home.

Kids DIY Vegetable Soup for World Food Day

To celebrate World Food Day, students at Sherman Elementary School will make their own vegetable soup kits to take home and cook for their families. Observed in 150 countries to celebrate the creation of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, World Food Day promotes worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all.

Grow It Forward’s World Food Day 2020

Grow It Forward, in partnership with UW Extension Food WIse and First Presbyterian Church, will teach 75-100 food insecure families the ease and affordability of growing their own microgreens. Families will first taste microgreens as a part of a salad prepared during the free community dinner at First Presbyterian Church. We will be hosting in class workshops on 10/16/19 at YSWPCS or 10/17/19 YSMCS. Please sign up for a time slot if you are interested in having your class participate. The lessons are: 1. Regenerative agriculture (in the school garden) planting legumes, cover crops, and fall bulbs. Students will also learn about composting and how to build a compost bin for their home gardens. 2.
