SUMMARY:Slow Food KNOW FISH® Dinner
DESCRIPTION:The confusion over what seafood is “safe” is real. Whether it’s questions about trawling (what is that?) or mercury or Alaskan versus California salmon\, sourcing and cooking fish can feel daunting. \nOver the course of the next year\, Slow Food East Bay aims to guide you toward resources that will help alleviate these concerns. Through gatherings both large (a Halibut Festival!) and small (learn how to pickle herring!) you’ll learn why knowing where your seafood comes from matters. \nWe’re kicking off this year of exploration on Tuesday May 21\, gathering in community for a KNOW FISH dinner® at 25 Lusk in San Francisco.  Chef Matthew Dolan and his team will be cooking an incredible meal of four courses of locally sourced\, seasonal and sustainable fish paired with locally sourced and sustainable wines. \nThis will be your chance to hear the story of the seafood you’re eating directly from the harvester who caught it or the fishmonger who sourced it directly from the producer. You’ll hear the real truth about local fisheries and ocean systems from Sea Forager Kirk Lombard\, ardent advocate for transparency Kenny Belov from TwoxSea and “Senior Science Geek” Gary Fleener of Hog Island Oysters. Expect talk of climate change\, problematic policies and the challenge of cheap imports. And they’ll share the compelling reasons why we need to pay more attention to this great ocean system to our west and ask more pointed questions of our fishmongers and food purveyors \nSlow Fish North America Oversight Team members Kelly Collins-Geiser and Jacquelyn Ross will host the evening\, sharing the story of Slow Fish’s mission and values. KNOW FISH dinners and Slow Fish Rising Tide are a partnership of Slow Fish North America and Slow Food USA. \nLimited seats are available and you don’t want to miss this!

SUMMARY:Slow Food Portland Convivium- Olive Oil: Field notes from Oregon and Italy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our April Convivium when we will take a deep dive into olive oil – a renowned agricultural product. Olive oil producers the world over are being affected by climate change. Warming temperatures make the annual harvest time uncertain and impact harvest yields\, which in turn leads to price increases from established markets. \nIn Oregon a few forward looking farmers have planted olive groves\, anticipating that the regional climate will become ideal for olive production. We will learn about the burgeoning Oregon olive oil industry as well as get a better understanding of the Italian olive oil industry from two local experts. \nPaul Durant\, Founder of Durant Vineyards and Durant Olive Mill. Durant Olive Mill is the premier purveyor of Oregon milled Extra Virgin Olive Oil\, home to the only Olioteca in the Pacific Northwest\, and an eight year running gold award winner of the NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition. \nJim Dixon\, is the Founder and Co-owner of Wellspent Market. Jim is a James Beard Award-nominated food writer and avid home cook who knows that good meals start with good ingredients. After an eye opening trip to Italy in the 90s Jim decided to import a few cases of authentic Italian extra virgin olive oil which quickly developed into Real Good Food\, an olive oil and specialty food distribution business. \nWe will share select samples of both Oregon and Italian olive oils. \nFREE event\, everyone is welcome.\nRSVP here \nBeverages will be available for purchase.

SUMMARY:Long Island’s 5th Annual CSA Fair
DESCRIPTION:Come support local agriculture at the Long Island CSA Fair! (Community Supported Agriculture) Find the program that’s right for you!\nThe time to sign up for a share in a Community Supported Agricultural program is now\, and you can do it at the Long Island CSA Fair on Saturday\, March 9th! \nOver 15 farms from across Long Island will be participating. This will be a great opportunity to meet the farmer\, and to learn more about each individual CSA program\, allowing you\, the consumer\, to choose the perfect program for your family’s needs. Some programs offer just produce\, while others have “add on” options like fruit\, flowers\, cheese\, bread\, eggs\, meat and fish. Community Supported Agriculture supports local farmers by purchasing a weekly share of the harvest and paying up front\, giving the farmer the financial support at the beginning of the season when they need it. Some programs offer payment plans so you do not need to pay all up front. Either way\, CSA’s are one of the best ways to get fresh organic produce at fair prices! Supporting local\, sustainable agriculture\, is great for your health\, the planet\, and our local economy. \nThe CSA fair will be hosted indoors\, at the Sisters of St. Joseph Farm\, 1725 Brentwood Road\, in Building #2\, Brentwood\, Long Island\, from 11:00am – 3:00pm on Saturday\, March 9th \, The fair is free and open to all who are interested. You can come for a few minutes\, or stay for the whole time! \nThere will be cooking demonstrations throughout the day\, and delicious vegan\, vegetarian and gluten free foods will be available for purchase. \nThe Unique Knife Sharpening Truck will be there\, so bring your knives to be sharpened! \nSponsored by Slow Food North Shore\, iEat Green\, NOFA-NY\, and Deep Roots Farmers Market\, and is organized by Bhavani Jaroff\, founder of iEat Green\, LLC. \nIf you have any questions or would like more information\, please email Bhavani Jaroff at Bhavani@iEatGreen.com or on her cell at 516-238-3616

SUMMARY:Embrace accessibility to grow your audience
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE\nUsing accessibility techniques can grow your audience by up to 20% (and help you better communicate with your current audience). \nDigital communications is often a seat-of-the-pants effort\, which can lead to gaps in our understanding (and perhaps a few bad habits). One of the potential holes in our understanding is how to better communicate with the many people that have physical and/or mental challenges when they use digital content. By better understanding their challenges and how they use technology to consume digital content\, we can make a few changes to our webpages\, newsletters\, social media\, and emails that can make a big difference in how successful their experience is. \nAbout our presenter:\nSlow Food St. Louis Co-Chair George Sackett has been involved in web development for almost three decades. For the last fifteen years\, he has worked for St. Louis Community College focusing on providing good content for the college’s website. Sackett got introduced to the topic of web accessibility after getting involved with an international professional organization called Higher Education Web Professionals. In 2018\, he hosted the first accessibility conference for the association. There is nothing like being in charge of such an event to focus one’s energy on learning more about digital accessibility. Sackett became a “champion” for the topic within his organization and covered the basics of digital accessibility during training events within the college\, eventually training over 400 people on the importance of digital accessibility in all forms of communication.
