Happy International Women’s Day! Today and every day, we want to celebrate all the amazing women who are transforming our foodways.
We are especially inspired by the women who have created restaurants and businesses that produce good, clean and fair food for all; however, less than 7% of U.S. restaurants are led by women.
So today, we honor those who have broke through barriers to bring us their crafts. Our Snail of Approval award, which recognizes food and beverage establishments that are pursuing and practicing Slow Food values, currently recognizes 104 women-led businesses.
We sat down with one of our Snail of Approval awardees, Julia Sullivan, owner of Henrietta Red in Nashville, last fall to chat about her Slow Food journey. “I learned about Slow Food for the first time in my Intro to Gastronomy Class at the CIA [Culinary Institute of America], and it’s something that has informed a lot of decisions I’ve made in my career,” Julia explained. “It’s an exciting thing to be a part of.”
