Food and Farm Policy

The Slow Food USA Food and Farm Policy Community Action Team brings together diverse stakeholders from our network, and beyond, to advocate at every level of government for policies that will help forge the political, social, environmental, and economic links of a food chain that is good, clean and fair for all.

A food chain that is good, clean and fair for all starts with our personal decisions about what food is on our plates and continues by advocating for federal, state and local public policies that affect every aspect of the food chain, from field and sea to fork.

The magnitude of the failings in our food chain is such that we cannot truly achieve our goals going it alone. Our decades of engagement lead us to the imperative of adding our voice to those of other, like-minded, organizations in  advocating for public food and farm policy that aligns with our beliefs and complements the on-the-ground programs and campaigns of our network.

POLICY PRIORITIES TO ADVANCE JOY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL

Updated July 2024

Advocating for Sustainable Practices to promote a Healthier Planet

We support policy that fosters long-term environmental best practices for farms, ranches and fisheries to protect water, soil health, indigenous foodways, sustainable regional food systems, land-based learning and conservation, land preservation and ecological biodiversity.

Supporting local, family-scale producers, fishers and workers

We support policy that ensures secure and equal access to resources (financial, educational, equipment, material, market access, medical and mental healthcare and safety) for family-scale farmers and ranchers, community-based and Indigenous fish harvesters, and farm and food chain workers

Securing Nutrition and Wellness for Children

We support policy that ensures and institutes the guidelines for children to have adequate access to nutritious and more healthful foods, reliably safe food, secure food through supplemental nutrition programs and food for the entire family. We stand behind policy that provides support for food and farm educational experiences to children, health and wellness for children and building community around all of these principles.

Fighting for Equity, Inclusion and Justice within our Food System

We believe all food and farm policy must have at its foundation equity, inclusion and justice FOR ALL. We stand with policy that aims to address and repair current and historic inequities in our food system, forwarding policy that specifically seeks to meet the needs of BIPOC, underserved, and/or socially disadvantaged farmers, fishers, producers AND consumers.
